  • "A Modest Proposal" is an essay that uses satire to mae its point. A satire is a literary work that attacks or pokes fun at vices, abuses, stupidity, and/or any other fault or imperfection. A satire critisizes someone or something, using wit and clever wording.

Jonathan Swift wrote "A Modest Proposal" to call attention to abuses inflicted on irish Catholics by well-to-do English Protestants. Because the whole point of this writing was to pin point a certain problem and point out the abuses and conflict this makes this writing considerd a satire.

A satire simply is having one subject in a piece of writing and in that writing your pointing out everything on that subject. You may be critisizing it, complimenting it, abusing basically just writing anything but about that subject. So yes, this particular piece of writing "A Modest Proposal" does qualify as a satire.

ShakeSpeares influence even visible in CCTS!

I dont know if any of you have ever saw the performance Caberate, About a night club a foreign American and the Nazi takeover. As well as the story between the inn keeper and the Shop keeper. Both are old and lonely and obviously are in love. But because they are so old they are hesitant to marry. One of the qoutes they say are "You are no Romeo and i am no Juilet!" I noticed this when i saw the act at Camden County Technical school in Sickleville. It was a amazing play with a strong story line and a tragic ending... Sound familar? Tragity was always one of shakespeare's favorite things to write about.
What becomes obvious is that the writer of the story Caberate was inspired by shakespeare. He even uses Romeo and Juilet to compare 2 of his own characters in his story. And ontop of that the writer made the story a tragic one.

What this says is that even today shakespeare is still influencing stories and movies. Every one is familar with his work... Im confident people will still know his work centuries into the future. He will continue to inspire people and help make amazing stories. If he has gotten this far, whats stopping him from never dieng out? He is the best writer there has ever been.

The Mind of a Genuis

Have you ever read something like Shakepseares work and said "WOW! Thats really good! How did he ever come up with a idea like that for his story?" I wouldent blame you if you said you did. Shakespeares work in my opinion is the best litature work around! Many people would back me up if i made this statement. Im not saying that you should believe that he is the best. But you should reconize that he is one of the best. And after you can clearly state Shakespeare is one of the greatest writers of all time and mean it, a question will most likely arise. Where does shakespeare come up with these ideas for all his plays and sotries! Elaborate and deep characters and story lines with a twist and turn around every corner leaves you on the edge of your seat almost pulsating with energy as the same thing repeats in your head! "Whats going to happen next?!?! Whats going to happen next?!?!?!" Well some of his ideas for his stories come from a rather unlikely or odd place.

One of shakespeare's sources of inspiration and information was the bible! The bibles stories told of all sorts of diffrent tragaties and miracles. the bible could have given Shakespeare ample amount of inspiration for his stories. Not alot is known about shakespeare espiacally between 1585 and 1592 AKA his lost years. But when he emerged from these lost years his plays and stories went from trash like Titues Andronicus to amazing and mind capturing stories like MacBeth and Romeo and Juilet! Another source of inspiration was said to be his real life events. Some say he would make things happen on purpose to create a story from it. Others say what happened in his stories took place in his life just maybe tweaked a bit.

Its hard to say where his inspiration came from but we can make a few assumptions. The bible for starters is the source people say is most likely. Real life events are probably less of a chance, but if he cuased them to happen to others you have a more realistic source of inspiration. Stories of other people's hard times could easily been changed to make them more dramatic. The truth is we dont know were most of shakespeares ideas came from. But what we can say is that when they did come, they were extaordinary!

I see Shakespeare everywhere i go... Everywhere i go... Everywhere i go.......

Shakespear is undoubtedly one of the most famous authors and for good reasoning to. His words are as poetic as the music that gods would listen to. Each word flows out with a distinct impact that can leave you sad and depressed or inspired to do better with your life. Even now almost 400 years after his death almost every person with the literary knowledge of a 1st grader knows who he is. His work is portayed in muesems and books. His work is even portayed in a common TV show you might not even realize was Shakespears work. And thats what i want to talk about today, i want to show you just how popular his work is. That even now 400 years later people still do their school plays on Romeo and Juilet (One of the most well heard of book and play that he wrote). That now 400 years later you can see his work everywhere you go. Maybe the Kids of Widney High shouldent have said i see pretty girls everywhere i go, but rather i see Shakespear everywhere i go.

Im sure you have heard of the 3d animated TV show on Nickelodeon called Jimmy neutron right? The show about a boy with a very large head to compicate for his very large brain, who invents, builds, creates and saves the world from destruction one "Brain Blast" at a time. Even childrens cartoons have Shakespear in them. In a popular episode "Macbeth in space" Jimmy goes for the lead role of Macbeth so he can kiss the female lead role (The girl he has a crush on). Heres some quick dialouge from the script of the voice actors.

Sheen: This year's play is "Macbeth in Space". Whats that about?
Carl: Some guy with a girl's last name.
Ike: Principle Wiloughby said it was written by some guy name Williams Shakespear.
Oleander: Isn't he the janitor?

I couldent find a full script of the episode but im sure if you google it you can find it eventually! Their Macbeth has some serious diffrences then the actual Macbeth, for starters its in space. The original Macbeth is not in space. Obviously some of the story is the same, the damsil is in-fact still in distress. They incoporated some old-english in the play but they dident over due it to the point where children would have trouble understanding what they were saying. Such as jimmy saying this

"Fear not Lady Macbeth for thou are going to be saved by me, Mr. Macbeth!"

Compared to the original text which probably looked something like this

Thou shall fret not, as my good person will rescue you with haste to ensure your life free to live Lady Macbeth.

Macbeth was writted sometime around 1604- 1609 so the play really is over 400 years old. I think i proved my point when i say Shakespear makes a impression on our lives 400 years after his death. Making TV shows is not walk in the park, it takes time and patience and it is very expensive! A single episode of the simpsons show can cost up to 5 million to 50 millions dollars to create! Jimmy nuetron is 3d Animated so they would have to pay much more money to their workers to create the animations because it is much harder! So the price for a single episode of Jimmy Nuetron can cost 10-60 million dollars to make! Dedicating a single episode just to Macbeth and Shakespears work really shows just how big Shakespear is. Even today his plays are acted out at Broad way and other famous theaters. He is one of the greatest writers of all time in my opinion, and i would like to see you try to contradict me!

BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH! (March 15th)

On the Ides of March (or March 15), 44 B.C., Julius Caesar was betrayed by his friends and countrymen and assassinated at the foot of a statue of Pompey, where the Senate was meeting on that date.

Because of the assassination of Julius Caesar and the soothsayer's exchange about it with Julius Caesar, in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar tragedy, the Ides of March now signifies a fateful day.

Before the assassination of Julius Caesar, the Ides of March was simply a division of the calendar based on the phases of the moon. In some months, the Ides is on the 15th, and in others, it is the 13th. Additionally, March's Ides marked the beginning of the consular year, since the two annually elected Roman consuls took office on the Ides from c. 220 B.C. to 153, when they began to take office on the Kalends of January (what we call New Year's Day).

Already in the days following the assassination, the Ides of March held a special significance. Instead of writing "the assassination of Caesar", Cicero could assume he would be understood when he alluded to it by reference to the Ides of March:

Like the conspirators, Cicero believed killing Julius Caesar was an act of liberation and the only way to avoid the prospect of him being named emperor. His opponents claimed Julius Caesar was trying to reinstate the monarchy. The conspirators have been criticized for lack of foresight in not planning what would come next. Cicero, who although he sympathized with the plot against Caesar had not been not one of the knife-wielding assassins, went on to support Julius Caesar's heir, Octavian, the first emperor of Rome.
